Easy Recipes for children can be fun, safe, economical and quick.
Here are some quick, easy, safe and fun recipes and detailed instructions specially tailored for preschool and kindergarten kids.
So, include some simple culinary skills into your preschool activities as you train their gross and fine motor development.
At the same time, enrich their vocabulary and language practice as they work with their hands.
Here are some easy recipes to use:
COOL CHOCOLATE MINT DELIGHT
- 1/4 cup margarine or butter
- 1 pkg regular marshmallows (about 40pcs)
- 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
- 2 Tbsp Cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp peppermint flavoring
PREPARATION
- Place margarine and marshmallows in a large bowl
- Stick it into the microwave
- Select 2 minutes HIGH
- Take it out to stir
- Microwave for another 1 minute till marshmallows become marshy
- Take it out, add chocolate and peppermint flavor
- Stir until evenly coated.
- Press into large cookie cutter shapes with a spatula
- Push it out when it cools and hardens.
If you don't have enough cookie cutters for your children in the class, you can use a pan (13 x 9 in) and then cut the crisps into squares or bars, or the particular shape you would teach in your lesson for the day.
These easy recipes are safe with some adult supervision, especially when the food is taken out of the microwave.
NOTE
Children should have been trained to carry a tray upright before introducing this activity. Or teachers / parents can help in doing the hot stuff for the younger kids.
YUMMY PEANUT CHOCOLATE CRUNCH
INGREDIENTS
- 3 cups marshmallows (miniature)
- 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
- 2/3 cup peanut butter (smooth)
- 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet)
- 1/2 cup chopped peanuts (optional)
PREPARATION
- Place chocolate chips and peanut butter in a large bowl
- Stick it into the microwave
- Select 2 minutes HIGH
- Take it out to stir
- Microwave for another 1 minute or till contents are melted
- Take it out, add marshmallows & chopped peanuts
- Mix throroughly till evenly coated
- Butter a pan (13 x 9in)
- Press firmly into the pan
- Chill until firm (45 minutes)
- Cut into squares or bars (may need adult help / kids who had been taught to use sharp objects)
Alternatives for younger kids
Instead of pressing the mixture into a pan, teachers / parents can cut it into different shapes, like a butterfly, a flower, a house, leaves, kites, snakes...etc and then get the children, especially the younger ones to decorate with colorful gummies, chocolate chips, raisins, candies...etc
Preschool kids love to dress up
Use paper towels to make chef hats for them
Provide some small rolling pins and aprons
They will have a wonderful time
FUNNY FACE TOASTIES
INGREDIENTS
- Sliced cheese
- Grated cheese
- Bread slices
- Sliced olives or raisins
- Red pepper
- Sliced mushrooms
- Whole Kernel Corn
PREPARATION
- Ensure kids have washed their hands clean
- Distribute a piece of waxed paper / foil (ie ensuring enough room for writing the kids' names)
- Have / help them write their names at the bottom of the paper
- Distribute a piece of bread
- Guide the kids to place the bread centrally on the waxed paper/ foil without covering their names
- Align a sliced cheese over the bread
- Place all dried ingredients on separate bowls in the middle of the work space
- Encourage kids to make funny faces with the ingredients
- Toast it in a toaster oven till cheese melts a little
As a Guide:
- Sliced cheese for the base
- Sliced olives / raisins for the eyes
- Sliced red pepper for the mouth
- Whole Kernel Corn for the nose
- Sliced mushrooms for the ears
- Grated cheese for the hair
Increase the level of these easy recipes for older kids in a group project:
- Use more bread slices and cut them up into shapes
- Small piece of bread for the neck
- 2 slices for the body (cut one into triangle to make a skirt)
- Cut rectangles for the arms & legs
- Decorate making buttons, pockets, hands...etc with dried ingredients
- Optional - use round pita bread for the face / head
"JUST DUMP IN" MINI PIZZAS EASY RECIPES
INGREDIENTS
- Grated cheese
- Pita bread
- Wieners / hot dogs
- Can of Pineapple slices
- Can of tomato paste
- Slices of cold cut ham (optional)
PREPARATION
- Ensure kids have washed their hands clean
- Distribute a piece of waxed paper (ie ensuring enough room for writing the kids' names)
- Have / help them write their names at the bottom of the paper
- Distribute a piece of pita bread
- Guide the kids to place the bread centrally on the waxed paper without covering their names
- Have them cover the pita by spreading tomato paste
- Place all dried ingredients on separate bowls in the middle of the work space
- Encourage kids to cover the pita with the ingredients without spilling out too much (great motor skill training)
- Top it with grated cheese
- Toast it in a convectional or toaster oven till cheese melts
More motor skill training for older kids:
- Some kids may cut the wieners into little round pieces
- Some kids may grate the cheese
- Some kids may slice the pineapples
- Some kids may cut or tear the ham slices into smaller pieces
HEALTHY FRUITY POPSISCLES
INGREDIENTS
- Frozen strawberries (thawed a little)
- Plain yogurt
- A drop of vanilla
- A little honey
PREPARATION
- Put all ingredients into a blender
- Blend it till its smooth
- Pour into popsicle molds
- Put into the freezer
HEALTHY FRUITY SMOOTHIES EASY RECIPES
INGREDIENTS
- 1 Frozen peeled ripe banana
- 1 cup orange juice
PREPARATION
- Cut banana into chunks (great cutting lessons for kids)
- Throw banana chunks into blender (count as you throw)
- Pour in orange juice (enhance pouring skill)
- Remember to close the cover (or you'll get fruity splash!)
- Press the button to blend till smooth
- Pour into glasses (another pouring lesson)
You can use any type of frozen fruits combined with any juice.
You may also use yogurt or fresh / soya milk.
These easy recipes will bring much joy and pride to your preschool kids at Summer time. It's also great to enhance the eye-hand coordination of the kids while they practice pouring.
Instead of juice, use Flavored Crystals (Tang, Kool Aid...etc) and mix it with water to give the kids another motor skill experience of stirring. It is cheaper too.
